About the Dish
The tuna poké bowl is a Hawaiian dish that showcases fresh, marinated raw tuna served over a bed of rice with vegetables, seaweed, and flavorful toppings. Poké (pronounced “poh-kay”) means “to slice” or “to cut crosswise” in Hawaiian, referring to the cubed fish at the heart of the dish. Traditionally prepared by Native Hawaiians using locally caught reef fish mixed with sea salt, seaweed, and crushed kukui nuts, poké evolved over time with Japanese and other Asian influences, introducing soy sauce, sesame oil, and rice. Today, the tuna poké bowl reflects Hawaii’s multicultural culinary history and its deep connection to the ocean.
